About
A dad, a mailbox, and a soft spot for a good scare
My name’s Jason, and growing up, I was obsessed with exactly the kind of stories you’ll find here: the eerie, page-turning, read-under-the-covers-with-a-flashlight kind. The books that made you a little afraid to turn the light off, and made you race back the next day to find out what happened next. That feeling — of a story you couldn’t put down — is what got me hooked on reading in the first place.
I’m a father, and watching how kids relate to reading these days got me thinking. Screens are everywhere. Attention spans are short. But that same thrill I felt as a kid — the creepy, can’t-stop-reading kind — hasn’t gone anywhere. Kids still want to be scared, still want a mystery to chase, still light up over a good cliffhanger. They just don’t always get handed the right story in the right format to discover that.
That’s where The Boogeyman’s Mailbox came from: an old-fashioned love of the spine- tingling stories I grew up on, delivered in short, bite-sized letters instead of a whole book at once — something that feels a little more approachable, a little more exciting to open, and hopefully just enough to help a kid fall in love with reading without even realizing that’s what’s happening.
Every story is crafted the same way: real suspense, nothing graphic, and a hero who always chooses to trust a grown-up instead of facing the scary thing alone. I want kids to have fun being spooked — not to be genuinely scared of the world, or to feel like the story’s asking them to keep something from the people who care about them.
If your reader finishes one of these letters a little too excited for the next one to arrive, I’ve done my job.
